The five base upgrades
Your base has five upgrade tracks. They are not equal — pouring early resources into the wrong one is the most common way new players stall. Here is the priority order, ranked from must-have to optional:
- #1
Treadmill
Critical prioritySpeedThe single most important upgrade in the game. Every Treadmill level raises your Speed stat, which gates every biome and directly improves your escape survival rate.
- •Speed is the currency of everything: biomes, escapes, and egg runs.
- •Early Treadmill levels are cheap - buy them before any other upgrade.
Best for: Every player, always · Max level: Unlimited (scales into end-game)
- #2
Base Income Multiplier
High priorityIncomeRaises your base's passive income multiplier. Combined with pet passives, this is the backbone of late-game money since base income can out-earn active stealing in the end-game.
- •Late-game income splits roughly 35% passive / 30% treadmill / 30% base / 5% egg race - the base is a third of it.
- •Buy this before walls or turrets once your base is getting raided less.
Best for: Late-game income · Max level: Scales with progression
- #3
Walls
Medium priorityDefenseReinforces your base so hostile players and guards take longer to break in. Walls buy time for your alarms and turrets to do their job.
- •Walls are a trap early on - a raider with higher speed ignores them anyway.
- •Invest in walls only after your income multiplier can pay for them passively.
Best for: Solo defenders · Max level: Several tiers
- #4
Alarms
Medium priorityDefenseDetects intruders early and warns you before they reach your egg stash. The few extra seconds of warning are often the difference between saving an egg and losing it.
- •Alarms pair with turrets - the alarm tells you when to call the turret fire.
- •Always keep alarms at least one level behind your walls.
Best for: Active defenders · Max level: Detection range & warning time scale
- #5
Turrets
Low priorityDefenseAutomated defense towers that shoot intruders. Turrets are the most expensive defense upgrade and only pay off if your base is a frequent raid target.
- •Skip turrets until raiding is your main server problem - they cost too much early.
- •Turrets are stronger when combined with a Huge pet holding aggro in front of your gate.
Best for: High-traffic servers · Max level: Scales with base level
Recommended early-game order
Treadmill first, always. Then Base Income Multiplier once your pet team is earning. Hold Walls, Alarms, and Turrets until other players actually start raiding your pen — by then your income can pay for them passively. See the Beginner Guide for the full first-hour walkthrough and the Nest & Guard guide for defense specifics.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I upgrade first in Steal an Egg?
Always start with the Treadmill. Speed is the currency of the entire game — it gates every biome, improves your escape survival, and compounds forever. Base Income Multiplier is the clear second priority once your pets are earning.
Are Walls and Turrets worth buying early?
No. Walls and Turrets are defense upgrades that only pay off once your base is actually being raided by other players. In the early game nobody targets you, so that Robux or cash is better spent on Speed and income.
How does the Base Income Multiplier work?
It raises your base passive income multiplier. Combined with pet passives, base income becomes a major slice of late-game money — roughly a third of total earnings once your roster and treadmill are developed.
